Journey from Stockholm’s Treasures to the Ancient Heart of Sweden

Embark on an unforgettable journey back in time, tracing the footsteps of legendary Norse explorers, traders, and chieftains. This tour is designed for those who wish to move beyond the myth and connect with the true story of the Vikings.

Your Itinerary:

1. The Prologue: Vikings in Stockholm
Your day begins at the renowned History Museum aka “Historiska” in Stockholm. here, you will be greeted by the breathtaking Gold Room and, most importantly, the premier Viking exhibition in the world, forget the horned helmets of legend; here, you will encounter the real Vikings, marvel at exquisitely crafted jewelry, fearsome weapons, and everyday objects that tell a story of travel, trade, and power, the highlight is the opportunity to come face-to-face with authentic Viking skeletons, offering a poignant connection to these people of the past, this visit provides the essential context for the ancient landscapes we will explore.

2. The Chieftain’s Mark: Jarlabanke’s Bridge aka Jarlabankes bro”
We then travel north to the lush region of Täby. Our first stop is the remarkable Jarlabanke’s Bridge, part of an ancient causeway crossing what was once a fjord. This is not just a relic; it’s a statement of power. You will walk where Vikings walked and see runestones erected by the local chieftain, Jarlabanke, who famously boasted: “Alone, he owned this entire hundred.” It’s a unique chance to stand on a tangible piece of Viking-age infrastructure and understand the importance of control over trade routes.

  • The region around Stockholm has the highest density of runestones in the world. In the tour area Runriket aka (The Rune Kingdom),  between Stockholm and the municipalities of Täby and Vallentuna, you can explore the history of runestones at sites located around the Vallentuna lake.
  • The gateway to Runriket is located at Jarlabankes bro with an information centre, outdoor exhibition, experience park and a reconstruction of the Viking Age monument

3. A Symbolic Transition: Täby Church aka “Täby Kyrkan”

A short journey brings us to the serene Täby Church. This stop offers a fascinating glimpse into Sweden’s transition from the Norse pagan beliefs to Christianity. built centuries after the Viking Age, the church grounds and walls incorporate several Viking runestones. Seeing these ancient symbols, once dedicated to pagan gods, now standing quietly beside a Christian church, tells a powerful story of cultural and religious transformation.

4. A Regal Repast: Lunch at Steninge Castle aka “Steninge Slott”
After a morning of exploration, we indulge in a well-earned lunch at the magnificent Steninge Slott (Steninge Castle). Enjoy a delicious Swedish meal in the elegant surroundings of this 18th-century manor house, the beautiful estate, located by the water, provides a perfect backdrop to relax, reflect on the morning’s discoveries, and prepare for the final chapter of our journey.

5. The Destination: Sigtuna, Sweden’s First Town
Our main destination is the charming town of Sigtuna, founded in 980 AD by King Erik the Victorious, this is where history truly comes alive, stroll along Stora Gatan, Sweden’s oldest main street, with its colorful wooden houses, your guide will lead you to the town’s medieval ruins, numerous runestones, and the quaint streets that retain the spirit of the Viking Age mercantile town, you’ll have free time to explore the unique boutiques, admire the tranquil Lake Mälaren, or visit the local museum.

6. Return to Stockholm
As the afternoon draws to a close, we board our comfortable coach/van for the scenic return journey to Stockholm, filled with memories of runes, chieftains, and the enduring legacy of the Vikings.(Duration: Full Day (Approx. 8-9 hours).
